Read, Write and ROAR!

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go”

-Dr. Seuss.

We can probably all agree that reading and exposing literature to our children at a young age is an integral part for their growth, but do we know some of the specific advantages it provides them before they experience the early stages of school?

It creates stronger relationship between child and parent.

As you may know it is harder to have that alone time with the kids as they grow older. That is why it is important that you spend that quality time reading together when they still want to hang out with Mom and Dad!

Prepares your child for school

Reading to your child at a young age is beneficial because it gives them a higher capacity to learn in general. It is important to do this so that when your child reaches elementary school he or she is able to access this knowledge of reading and sentence structure to apply to subjects such as math and science, which he or she will likely be introduced to in elementary school.

Communication skills

When you read to your child it gives them the opportunity to express themselves and question things they are learning. Having your child listen to the dialogue and interactions between characters while your child is communicating with you will greatly enhance their overall communication skill set.

 Making reading fun

Choose books at the child’s level, and make it interactive. There are many reading sites online for example www.starfall.com, and www.Scootpad.com that capture the essence of fun reading very well.

Another great tip is to take advantage of poor weather, for instance if the forecast shows rain it might be fun to cuddle up inside and have a little snack while you read to your child. It is also a good idea to read a series so your child can get excited to read the next installment of the story.

At the Pantry we understand the importance of early childhood literacy and that’s why we’ve partnered with the BC Lions in their “Read, Write and Roar” program.
