One of our newest features at The Pantry is all about blueberries! Not only are they delicious and perfect for a healthy summer snack, they also provide health benefits.

According to Best Health there are 5 health benefits of blueberries..

- They fight off disease. Researchers have found that blueberries contain the highest amount of antioxidants that a fruit can hold.

- They reduce belly fat. Research shows that blueberry intake effects genes related to fat burning and storage.

- Prevention of hypertension. Eating 1/2-cup of blueberries a week reduces the chances of getting this condition.

- Maintaining your brain. Consumption of blueberries shows signs of improved memory.

- Reduced risk of colon cancer. Research shows that there is a compound in blueberries can help protect against colon cancer. 

 

Here's some BC Blueberry Facts! 

  • 99% of BC blueberries are grown in the Fraser Valley in Richmond, Pitt Meadows, Matsqui Prairie and Surrey.

  • BC produces about 95% of the Canadian cultivated blueberries.
  • Blueberries are harvested 2 to 4 times usually every 10 to 14 days between July and September.

  • After harvest the berries are either sold fresh or sent to a processor or packer.

  • BC is one of the top three blueberry producing regions in the world. In the last 10 or 15 years, per capita consumption of blueberries has doubled.
